I’ve been a Britney fan from the beginning. I mean, I was 14 when Baby One More Time dropped. Anything less would have been un-American!! So yeah, I’ve been rooting for Brit to be back on top ever since she started acting a little wonky (perhaps a slight understatement, but oh yeah- “People shave their heads every day”).
Overall, I think Circus is great! I think she’ll have a ton of hit singles from this. And because I know inquiring minds want to know, I’ve written out some responses I had upon my first listen of the album. There were some songs that I didn’t have a lot to say about, some I simply loved and some that were just meh (since this is a written blog and not a video, you might not be able to tell from the spelling that meh is the noise one makes when something is adequate but nothing more.)
Circus: I simply LOVED this one! My favorite on the album
Out From Under: Meh…maybe this song will grow on me.
Kill The Lights: Meh.
Shattered Glass: I simply loved this one.
If You Seek Amy: The beginning of this song reminds me of that awful Ashlee Simpson song Outta My Head (ehh…somebody burned me a copy of that…). It’s an okay song, but I don’t know what the heck she is talking about. “All of the boys and all of the girls are begging to If You Seek Amy.” And yes, the last four words were capitalized in the lyrics. Maybe that’s just because I’m looking at MetroLyrics.com. AMATURES!
Unusual You: I like this one…reminds me of Edward Cullen. I mean look at these lyrics:
Maybe you’re not even human cause
Only an angel can be so unusual
Sweet surprise, I could get used to
Unusual You
Did they get together with Twilight producers and plan this? Although the further I get into the song, I’m actually reminded more of fictional character Powder, because he is what I inadvertently think of when I hear the word “unusual.”
Blur: First thing I notice: two words from the first verse are bleeped out- Damn, I bought the censored version! Itunes always tricks me into this mistake! This song is pretty good. Maybe because it’s relatable. Who hasn’t felt like this at some point:
Can't remember what I did last night
Maybe I shouldn't have given in
But I just couldn't fight
Hope I didn't but I think I might've
Everything, everything is still a blur
Can't remember what I did last night
Everything, everything is still a blur (Did last night)
Can't remember what I did last night
Everything, everything is still a blur
The beat in the background reminds me of some ATB CD I used to listen to in high school.
Mmm Papi: This song repeats the phrase “Mmm Papa love you Mmm Papa love you” Now, I feel weird about people calling each other Papi/Papa (unless of course it’s your grandfather or something, which in this case, I feel confident that the subject of this song is not.) So the song makes me cringe a little, but maybe it’s funny enough to like. Oh wait- I just heard a part where Britney pauses her singing for a quick spoken tidbit. In a cartoon-like voice she says:
Now see!
I'm mommy!
And that make you Papi!
And that makes us Luvi!
OWWWW!
ERRR ULTIMATE CRINGER!!! I still think I like the song though…
Mannequin: Good dance track.
Lace and Leather: Meh
My Baby: This is the first lyric: “Tiny hands/Yes that’s you /And all you show /It’s simply true.” I thought she said “tiny heads.” I thought that was weird, but once I realized it was hands, it made much more sense. This song is (I hope) about her sons. Otherwise, she’s dating a very small man and she is smelling his breath, which is making her cry. I’m pretty set on the son theory.
Oh no- I just came to this lyric: “My precious love/ Sent from above / My baby boo /Gotta thank you.” She just ruined a sweet lullaby with the word “boo.” Ugh. Now I feel like Ja Rule’s gonna bust in with a rapping interlude any second.
Rock Me In: This is GREAT!!! 2nd fav I think.
Radar: This was on the last CD? Why is it on this one?! It’s okay! Nobody’s too good for the occasional brain fart!
Phonography: I don’t know how I feel about references to technology in pop music. For example:
And I'll make no apologies, (Uh-uh)
I'm into phonography, (Uh-uh)
And I like my bluetooth, buttons comin' loose,
I need my hands free,
Then I let my mind roam,
Playing with my ringtone.
He's got service, I've got service,
Baby we can talk all night, (Go)
I’m having flashbacks to N*Sync’s Digital Get Down. Still like the song though.
Okay, that’s it. That was incredibly long, but worth it for you!
